Autonomy - A global and future perspective

Autonomous systems are rapidly transforming agriculture worldwide. From field operations to data-driven decision-making, they hold the promise of addressing key challenges such as labor shortages, rising production costs, and the need for more sustainable farming practices. Yet, their successful adoption requires not only technological innovation but also supportive frameworks, farmer acceptance, and international cooperation.
This panel discussion brings together leading voices from research, industry, and practice to shed light on the global opportunities and challenges of agricultural autonomy. Ben Alfi, CEO of Bluewhite (Israel), shares insights into pioneering applications of autonomy in the field and the lessons learned from scaling technologies in diverse agricultural environments. Prof. Dr. Peter Pickel (former Manager External Relations for John Deere) now Professor for Agricultural Robotics & Engineering at the University of Bonn, adds not just research perspective, highlighting the technological advances, system requirements, and the potential impacts on farming systems. Johannes Hipp from VDMA contributes with his expertise on international standards and policy frameworks, with a special focus on OECD-related issues that influence the global deployment of autonomous solutions.
Moderated by Olivia Spyman (LfL), the discussion explores key questions: Which innovations are driving autonomy worldwide? How do regulatory environments shape adoption? What role do collaboration and standardization play in ensuring safety, efficiency, and global scalability? And how can autonomy be implemented in ways that truly support farmers and society?
Participants can expect forward-looking insights and an engaging debate on how autonomy can shape the future of agriculture—across borders and in practice.
