CANopen is a CAN-based communication system. The CANopen CC (classic) is based on CAN CC (classic) and the further developed CANopen FD is based on CAN FD (flexible data rate). CANopen comprises higher-layer protocols and profile specifications. It has been developed as a standardized embedded network with highly flexible configuration capabilities. CANopen CC was designed originally for motion-oriented machine control systems, such as handling systems. Today it is used in various application fields, such as medical equipment, off-road vehicles, maritime electronics, railway applications, or building automation.
CANopen CC is standardized in EN 50325-4 and maintained at CiA in the document CiA 301. CANopen FD is maintained at CiA in the document CiA 1301.
CAN in Automation (CiA) is the international users' and manufacturers' group for CAN (Controller Area Network), established in March 1992, and located in Nuremberg, Germany. The aim is to provide an unbiased platform for further developments of CAN, to promote the image of CAN, and to assist users of all three generations of CAN (CAN CC, CAN FD, CAN XL). The CiA members develop jointly specifications for various CAN application fields and support actively the international standardization of CAN-based solutions. The nonprofit association offers seminars and conferences for sharing knowledge and experience in CAN-based networking. Additionally, CiA informs on latest developments in CAN, by means of its publications, such as the CAN Newsletter, the CAN Community News (CCN) email service, and its website. In November 2025, CAN in Automation (CiA) has more than 750 member companies, from all over the world.
