Safe inclination measurement in dynamic applications – IMS365R by SIKO
Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) are key components for the automation and autonomy of mobile machinery. With the IMS365R, SIKO offers a highly advanced IMU that not only delivers precise position data but is also suitable for safety-critical applications – thanks to planned certifications according to SIL2 and PLd.
The IMS365R uses a Kalman filter and a sensor fusion algorithm to filter out disturbances such as lateral accelerations, vibrations, and shocks from the inclination signal. This ensures reliable tilt values even in dynamic systems such as excavators, AGVs, or agricultural machinery. Filter parameters can be individually adjusted, and raw data is available for external processing. Additionally, tilt values are output as Euler angles (pitch & roll) – essential for spatial orientation and machine autonomy.
The IMS365R provides safe position data even under extreme conditions. In addition to inclination, acceleration, and angular rates, pitch and roll are also reliably captured and transmitted via the CANopen Safety interface. The safety concept enables use in critical applications – such as fast movements of an excavator arm or safe navigation of autonomous vehicles. Traditional applications like tilt measurement in aerial work platforms also benefit from the increased safety.
The sensor measures inclination, acceleration, and angular rates along all three spatial axes. The installation position is freely configurable and can be automatically detected. A special feature is the integrated heating element, which can be controlled via the interface and ensures stable measurement values even during strong temperature fluctuations.
The new housing design with two M12 connectors allows daisy-chaining of multiple sensors and reduces wiring effort. With a height of less than 26 mm, the IMS365R is suitable even for tight installation spaces. The robust construction meets numerous requirements for mobile machinery – including temperature resistance, EMC, salt spray, and contamination. E1 approval according to UN ECE R10 permits use on public roads.
The IMS365R is ideal for commercial vehicles such as construction machinery, industrial trucks, agricultural and forestry machines, as well as crane and lifting technology. Even under harsh conditions, it delivers reliable and accurate position data.
